Sprites
Until very recently, Jason Korzen was known for being the frontman of indie synthpop band Barcelona, a band with a legion of fans around the world, with some very special people among them: John Peel , Kasey Keller- former US soccer team goalie, and to whom Barcelona dedicated one of their songs-, and Cameron Crowe -director of "Singles" and "Nearly famous". Even Tom Cruise was seen dancing their songs on a movie set while filming with Mr Crowe.
But in 2002, when they seemed ready to cross the gap between indie and mainstream pop, Barcelona broke up. It was then that Jason, who until then wrote songs that spoke mostly about machines, technology and virtual relationships, decided to give his music a human twist.
Sprites was born with that "going back to basics" idea: his lyrics, a guitar, and some melodica arrangements were all he needed to create, along with his wife Amy and some friends from Washington D.C.'s pop scene, the songs that defined Sprites. Those were the tools he used to create some of the most exciting pop songs that can be heard right now.

The six tracks included in this exclusive record prove him right in his decision to change and, as do all of his songs, they show the talent Jason has when it comes to mix catchy pop tunes with brilliant lyrics about personal relationships .
The song "Bionic Hands" , that opens and gives name to the record, is a story out of a terror movie that illustrates the advantages of "the organic" vs "the synthetic", of Sprites vs Barcelona, and Jason is right again.
And, ¿Have you ever known one of those people that are obsessed with shoes? In "These shoes keep walking back to you", a classic tune in the band's live sets, Jason mixes love and footware in lyrics that ride a jumpy, close to pop-punk, rhythm. In "Love is dead", Jason pays tribute to the power pop band The Godfathers , and covers the song adapting it to fit into that Sprites sound we love so much.
It's impossible not to feel close to all the characters that Jason describes in his songs, and again it's hard not to fall for "This girl needed a dog". It's fun twist gives way to the sad side of the story of that girl that needs a friend and the song conquers you with it's great simplicity. "Tape sidetrack" manages to define the Sprites formula in less than four minutes, a formula of striking stories in simple words, sung to melodies that are right on target. Simple is beautiful, and it's fun.
I just love the records that end with a great song, with one of those songs that lingers in your mind for a long time after you've turned off your cd player. The irony behind the lyrics of "Maybe we should move to Canada", hides the grief of someone who doesn't feel comfortable with what his country has become. It's the perfect ending to this record and it comes to show that behind that apparent frivolity associated with indie pop, you can find personal reflections that are not superficial at all, as well as universal feelings that affect you as much as everyone else.
